The Department of Public Works announced today that Sloop Road will close between Wittmer Road and Highland Road in the Town of McCandless at 9 a.m. on Thursday, August 15, 2019, for road work. Specifically, crews will replace a culvert end wall as well as install a pipe extension, scour protection, storm drains, guiderail, and pavement. There also will be periodic single-lane closures on Highland Road near its intersection to Sloop Road for installation of a pipe extension and lagging outlet end wall. The project is expected to last through October.
Traffic affected by the Sloop Road closure will be detoured using Highland Road, Old Perry Highway, Perry Highway (Route 19), Sewickley Oakmont Road, Rochester Road, and Sloop Road.
Rochester Road is also currently part of a PennDOT detour related to a closure on Reis Run Road in Ross Township. Because there is generally low traffic through the closed section of Sloop Road, Public Works doesn’t expect any issues related to the detour overlap but will monitor traffic through its detour. In addition to continuing to coordinate with PennDOT, if an issue arises, the department will make adjustments accordingly.
Traffic affected by the Highland Road restrictions will be controlled by flaggers. Drivers are urged to use caution in the area.
The work is being done by Pugliano Construction of Pittsburgh as part of the 2019 Capital Bridge Repair Project, which is a $1.7 million construction contract to address six structurally deficient bridges in the county.
