PennDOT District 11 is announcing overnight lane and shoulder restrictions on eastbound (outbound) I-376 (Parkway East) in Edgewood Borough and the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will occur Monday through Thursday nights, May 12-15 weather permitting.

An eastbound (outbound) right-hand lane and shoulder closure will occur from 9 p.m. through 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights between the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and the Edgewood/Swissvale (Exit 77) interchange. Crews will construct a retaining wall on I-376 outside of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel near the site of the new Commercial Street Bridge.

Additionally, as part of this project there will be 35 extended overnight single-lane restrictions permitted. The extended restrictions will occur from 9 p.m. to 2 p.m. the following day. Weekend work will also occur. Notification will be provided in advance of the work.

The Commercial Street Bridge replacement project will utilize Accelerated Bridge Construction Techniques to laterally slide the new bridge onto the existing alignment of I-376 (Parkway East), which would be one of the largest lateral slide projects performed in Pennsylvania. The $95 million project located between the Edgewood/Swissvale (Exit 77) interchange and Squirrel Hill Tunnel in Swissvale Borough and the City of Pittsburgh began in June of 2024 with the reconstruction of the westbound I-376 off-ramp to Forest Hills/Wilkinsburg (Exit 78B). Additional work last season included the temporary relocation of Commercial Street and the Nine Mile Run Trail below the bridge, the relocation of sanitary sewer lines, and portions of phased ITS work. Work in 2025 includes the installation of new sign structures, temporary and permanent piers, abutments, and piles for temporary and permanent foundations, steel erection, and the continuation of phased ITS work. In 2025, nine overnight full closures and detours of eastbound I-376, a full weekend closure and detour of I-376 in each direction, and 35 extended weeknight single-lane restrictions on eastbound I-376 will occur.  In 2026, motorists can expect a 25-day full closure and detour of I-376. The overall project is anticipated to conclude in the summer of 2027.
