Six PRT 56-Lincoln Place Bus Stops to be Temporarily Discontinued
The Department of Public Works announced today that the Glenwood Bridge in the City of Pittsburgh will be closed to southbound/outbound traffic from 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 13 through 6 p.m. on Friday, October 18. The bridge will then be closed to northbound/inbound traffic from 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 20 through 6 p.m. on Friday, October 25. The closures are required for crews to safely do concrete repairs as part of the ongoing $4.4 million Glenwood Bridge preservation project.
To accommodate the closures, Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) announced that its
56-Lincoln Place bus route will be detoured. During the southbound closure, buses will be detoured using West Seventh Avenue (Route 837), West Eighth Avenue (Route 837), the Homestead Grays Bridge, Browns Hill Road, Imogene Road, Desdemona Avenue, and Johnston Avenue. During the northbound closure, buses will detour by going in the opposite direction on the same route as the southbound detour.
Additionally, six stops on the route will be temporarily discontinued during each closure. Those stops include the following:
SOUTHBOUND
- Second Avenue opposite Winston Street (Stop #12143)
- Second Avenue opposite Mansion Street (Stop #12144)
- Second Avenue at American Street (Stop #12145)
- Second Avenue at Vespucius Street (Stop #12146)
- Second Avenue at Renova Street (Stop #12147)
- Second Avenue opposite Aluvian Street (Stop #12148)
NORTHBOUND
- Second Avenue at Aluvian Street (Stop #12160)
- Second Avenue at Glenwood Ave (Stop #12161)
- Second Avenue opposite Vespucius Street (Stop #12162)
- Second Avenue at Mansion Street (Stop #12163)
- Second Avenue at Winston Street (Stop #12164)
- Second Avenue at Johnston Avenue (Stop #12165)

During the southbound closure, regular vehicle outbound traffic will be detoured using Irvine Street, Second Avenue, the Hotel Metal Bridge, Hot Metal Street, East Carson Street (Route 837), and Route 885. Northbound traffic will be allowed on the Glenwood Bridge using one lane.
During the northbound closure, regular vehicle inbound traffic will be detoured using East Carson Street (Route 837), Hot Metal Street, the Hot Metal Street Bridge. Southbound traffic will be allowed on the Glenwood Bridge using one lane.
Since the Glenwood Bridge preservation project began on March 4, 2024, the bridge has been reduced to two lanes – one in each direction. That traffic restriction will return following the upcoming full closures.
The project, which is expected to end in November 2024, is being done by Mosites Construction Company of Robinson. Work during the project includes steel, deck, sidewalk, drainage, and approach pavement repairs; replacement of expansion dams, painting, cleaning and sealing of concrete, as well as scour and erosion remediation.
The Glenwood Bridge carries state-owned Route 885 over the Monongahela River between the Hazelwood and Hays neighborhoods. It carries an average of 19,030 vehicles daily. It has a bridge condition rating of 5 (fair condition) on a 0-9 scale based on National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) established by the Federal Highway Administration.
