PennDOT District 11 is announcing a traffic crossover on the Birmingham Bridge which carries Route 2085 over the Monongahela River in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will begin Thursday morning, May 8 weather permitting.

Beginning at approximately 6 a.m. Thursday, northbound traffic on the Birmingham Bridge will be crossed over into the southbound lanes on the structure to allow crews to conduct expansion dam replacement work. Bi-directional traffic will be maintained in the southbound lanes around-the-clock through late July during this first phase of work. The new traffic pattern will consist of two southbound lanes of traffic, one lane of northbound traffic, and two bicycle lanes all maintained on the southbound lanes of the bridge. (This work was originally scheduled to begin Wednesday, May 6 but was postponed due to inclement weather)

Additionally, the northbound ramp to Forbes Avenue will close during the duration of the traffic crossover.  Ramp traffic will be detoured.

  • Continue northbound on the Birmingham Bridge to Fifth Avenue
  • Turn left onto Fifth Avenue
  • Turn left onto Moultrie Street
  • Turn left onto Forbes Avenue
  • End detour

Bicycles traveling northbound will be unable to access Fifth Avenue directly and must use the Forbes Avenue ramp to the Birmingham Bridge. Bicycles will be detoured via Forbes Avenue to Moultrie Street to Fifth Avenue.

Crossovers and ramp closures will occur on the Birmingham Bridge, which spans the Monongahela River in the City of Pittsburgh, while expansion dams are replaced on this project. Northbound traffic will be crossed over into the southbound lanes during the first phase of the project beginning in May. Phase 2 will cross the southbound lanes into the northbound lanes through the remainder of the project which is expected to conclude in late September 2025. Temporary bike lanes will be maintained during both phases of the project.                                                                           

Motorists should be prepared for changing traffic patterns. Please use caution when driving through the area.  Work zone safety is everyone’s responsibility.
