PennDOT District 11 is announcing the phase 2 traffic crossover on the Birmingham Bridge which carries Route 2085 over the Monongahela River is underway in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County.

Southbound traffic on the Birmingham Bridge has been crossed over into the northbound lanes on the structure to allow crews to conduct expansion dam replacement work. Bi-directional traffic will be maintained in the northbound lanes around-the-clock through late September during this second phase of work. The new traffic pattern consists of two northbound lanes of traffic, one lane of southbound traffic, and two bicycle lanes all maintained on the northbound lanes of the bridge.

Additionally, the ramp from Forbes Avenue to the bridge is closed during the duration of the traffic crossover.  Ramp traffic will be detoured.

Posted Ramp Detour

  • Continue on Forbes Avenue past the ramp
  • Turn left onto Craft Avenue
  • Turn left onto Fifth Avenue
  • Turn left onto the Birmingham Bridge
  • End detour

Bicycles traveling on Forbes Avenue will be detoured via Moultrie Street to Fifth Avenue.

Crossovers and ramp closures will occur on the Birmingham Bridge, which spans the Monongahela River in the City of Pittsburgh, while expansion dams are replaced on this project. Northbound traffic will be crossed over into the southbound lanes during the first phase of the project beginning in May. Phase 2 will cross the southbound lanes into the northbound lanes through the remainder of the project which is expected to conclude in late September 2025. Temporary bike lanes will be maintained during both phases of the project.                                                                                           

Motorists should be prepared for changing traffic patterns. Please use caution when driving through the area.  Work zone safety is everyone’s responsibility.
