It’s no secret that winter in Pittsburgh can be chilly, snowy, slippery, and oftentimes, dangerous. Whether you’re driving, riding public transit, biking or walking, we’ve put together a list of tips to keep you moving – and warm – this winter.

Tips for Cyclists:

  • Wear thermal, silk, or SmartWool base layers.

  • Use winter gloves, boots, or overshoes.

  • Protect your head and neck with a cap or scarf and wear clear goggles to shield your eyes.

  • Equip your bike with bright front and rear lights and reflective gear.

  • Carry extra batteries and a puncture repair kit.

  • Clean and lube your chain frequently to prevent damage.

Tips for Drivers:

  • Increase your following distance and allow plenty of space between your car and other vehicles.

  • Slow down – it will give you time to react to hazards when the roads are slippery.

  • Leave early and allow yourself extra time so that you don’t feel rushed.

  • Pack essential emergency items in your car including a blanket and flashlight.

  • Most importantly: Buckle up. Seatbelts continue to be proven as the #1 lifesaving device in crashes.

Tips for Pedestrians:

  • Wear appropriate footwear for winter conditions.

  • Anticipate hazards as you walk. When you come to a corner, slow down.

  • If you think a surface looks slippery, take short, sure steps instead of longer strides.

  • If you are carrying anything, make sure you can see over the top while you walk.

  • Be careful when getting into and out of vehicles.

  • Wear light-colored or reflective clothing and carry a light when you are walking after dark.

Tips for Transit Riders:

  • Plan extra time in your commute.

  • Be cautious when boarding in areas with ice and snowbanks.

  • Try to clean off snow from shoes prior to boarding the bus.

  • Be careful when boarding buses.

  • Avoid crowding the curb line as the bus approaches the bus stop.

  • Take extra measures when commuting at night.

  • Remember to always dress appropriately for the weather.
