The Department of Public Works announced today that two of the four lanes on the Homestead Grays Bridge in Pittsburgh and Homestead will be closed from 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21 through 6 a.m. on Thursday, October 22. Two of the four lanes will then close again from 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 22 through 6 a.m. on Monday, October 26. The traffic restrictions are necessary as part of an ongoing project to make repairs to the bridge’s spans, piers, and deck.
Extra time is needed for construction on the bridge this week due to placement of an epoxy overlay that needs time to cure in cooler temperatures.
Following this weekend, there will be periodic overnight lane closures at various locations on the bridge between 9 p.m. on Fridays to 6 a.m. on Mondays. The project began on Friday, October 2 and is expected to end on Monday, November 16.
The Homestead Grays Bridge is heavily traveled, with more than 40,000 drivers using it daily. Drivers should expect traffic delays in the area and are encouraged to allow extra travel time or attempt to avoid the area while construction is occurring.
Pugliano Construction of Plum is the primary construction contractor for the $902,594 project.
The Homestead Grays Bridge has a bridge condition rating of 5 (fair condition) on a 0-9 scale based on National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) established by the Federal Highway Administration. For more information about bridge condition ratings, visit alleghenycounty.us/bridges.
